Supreme Court Strikes Down Voting Rights Act Section 5 -- Shelby County v. Holder Opens Door to Wave of Voter Suppression Laws

In a 5-4 decision, the Supreme Court struck down Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act, which had required states and jurisdictions with histories of racial discrimination to obtain federal "preclearance" before changing voting procedures. Within hours of the ruling, Texas announced it would implement a strict voter ID law previously blocked by preclearance. Within months, previously-covered states -- Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, Texas, Virginia -- enacted strict photo voter ID laws, closed polling locations, purged voter rolls, and reduced early voting. Between 2013 and 2023, at least 94 restrictive voting laws passed in at least 29 states.
