Adoption Ads Lure Pregnant Woman To Utah
Utah has become a hub for "adoption tourism" in the U.S. The state's historically lax adoption laws have enabled so-called "baby brokers" to lure pregnant women from across the country to travel there and give birth. Kelsey Vander Vliet Ranyard, who works for a nonprofit called Ethical Family Building that tracks agencies and brokers that solicit pregnant women, describes how online ads play a key role in this process. In recent months, Utah has moved to tighten some of its laws in response to mounting criticisms from birth mothers, their advocates, and adoptive parents. ICE Protester says he wasDetained as Scare Tactic
Cole Sheridan was arrested during an anti-ICE protest in Chicago last year. He was held for four days for allegedly assaulting Border Patrol commander-at-large Greg Bovino, who was leading mass immigration sweeps across the U.S. Prosecutors dropped the case against Sheridan after video contradicted the claims. Sheridan and other protesters describe the tactics used in their arrests in "Caught in the Crackdown," a recent documentary from FRONTLINE and ProPublica.

The Effects of PFAS on The Human Body
“PFAS had been linked to a lot of different diseases.” Dana Barr, an environmental health researcher at Emory University, explains how high levels of some types of “forever chemicals” in the human body are correlated with serious health issues — and how, when it comes to treatment and mitigation, “there is nothing that has been shown to be effective yet.” Barr has tested the blood of almost 200 residents in Northwest Georgia for PFAS, discovering that values in this region are much higher than the general U.S. population. What happened during Border Patrol's California raids?
The roots of the Trump administration’s immigration sweeps in major cities can be traced back to a little-known operation that Greg Bovino, then Border Patrol's sector chief for El Centro, led in California in January 2025. Investigative reporter @sergioolmosphoto, who reported on the operation for CalMatters and Evident Media, notes that the agency said: "they had a targeted list of criminals they were going after." Did Bukele have a pact with MS-13?
Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele built his reputation on being extremely tough on his country’s gangs and reducing homicide rates. He publicly said that he would never negotiate with the gangs because “you are giving them legitimacy.” But an investigation by El Salvador investigative news outlet El Faro found evidence of negotiations between Bukele’s government and violent gangs like MS-13. In exchange for the drop in violence and political support, government officials offered special privileges to gang leaders in prison. What was Bukele’s response to gang violence?
Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele’s 2022 emergency measure, called a state of exception, granted his government enormous power to detain people suspected of being in gangs for long periods without trial. Prisons filled with thousands of people within weeks, among them gang members, but also many innocent people. When news outlet El Faro talked to the affected communities, they noted the tradeoff. Some Salvadorans expressed that they were willing to see innocent people arrested in exchange for no more gangs. The state of exception has been renewed month after month by congress.
