Trump Pledges $2,000 Tariff Rebate Checks — 'Will Be Paid' — Promise Broken

After the DOGE dividend evaporated, Trump iterated: tariff rebate checks of up to $2,000, proposed in July 2025 and again that October. By November he framed it as an ironclad pledge: "We're going to issue a dividend to our middle-income people and lower-income people of about $2,000," premised on his overstated claims that tariffs had made the Treasury "newly flush." Unlike the DOGE float, this one was framed as certain — "will be paid." The payments never came. Tariff revenue ran far below the administration's projections while consumer prices absorbed the costs. In December 2025 Trump floated a replacement: $1,000-$1,500 payments to Obamacare recipients instead of renewing their expiring subsidies — and recipients ultimately got neither.
