Musk and Trump Float '$5,000 DOGE Dividend Checks' — Never Issued

In February 2025, Elon Musk floated sending American households $5,000 dividend checks funded by 20% of the "savings" identified by the Department of Government Efficiency. Trump embraced the idea publicly: "There's even under consideration a new concept where we give 20% of the DOGE savings to American citizens and 20% goes to paying down debt because the numbers are incredible, Elon." Trump later branded the proposal "$5,000 DOGE DIVIDEND CHECKS!" The checks never arrived. DOGE's claimed savings — eventually touted as $215 billion — were independently assessed as grossly overstated, with the real figure a fraction of the claim and much of it from cuts courts later reversed. The pattern was established on day one of the second term: announce a check, never send it.
