EPA Proposes to Rescind Drinking Water Limits on Four PFAS Compounds

The EPA published a proposed rule (Docket EPA-HQ-OW-2025-0654) to rescind Biden-era maximum contaminant levels for four PFAS compounds in drinking water: PFHxS, PFNA, HFPO-DA (GenX), and Hazard Index mixtures. The agency also proposed extending compliance deadlines for PFOA and PFOS limits from 2029 to 2031. EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin stated the rollback was necessary to correct the unlawful procedure under which the original regulations were promulgated. Environmental groups described the move as a handout to PFAS polluters disguised as public protection. The proposal opened a 60-day public comment period ending July 20, 2026. PFAS chemicals are linked to cancer, infertility, and immune system problems and persist in the environment for years.
