How Kurrency Works
What is Kurrency?
Kurrency is UnderKurrent's engagement currency. It rewards participation and contribution to the platform — from daily logins to quality posts to kurator endorsements. You can spend Kurrency on premium features or gift it to other members.
How Do I Earn Kurrency?

Kurrency Expires
Kurrency expires on a rolling 60-day basis. Each time you earn Kurrency, it has its own 60-day expiry from when it was earned. This means:
- Kurrency earned on January 1 expires on March 2
- Kurrency earned on January 15 expires on March 16
- Each batch has its own expiry date
Your spendable balance is the sum of all non-expired Kurrency. Old Kurrency fades away naturally without a sudden loss. This encourages you to use your Kurrency rather than hoard it.
Lifetime earned (used for K-Score calculation) is never affected by expiry. Your K-Score reflects your total contribution history, not your current balance.
Who Gets Features Free?
These users have all premium features unlocked without spending Kurrency:
- Staff and administrators
- Kurators and above (karma 500+ AND K-score 60+)
- Founding Members (first 1,000 registered users)
- Rekurrent Subscribers ($5+/month)
Can I Gift Kurrency?
Yes! Visit any user's profile and click "Gift Kurrency" to send Kurrency to another member. The recipient can spend the gifted Kurrency on premium features.
- Maximum 500 Kurrency gifted per day
- Gifted Kurrency expires after 60 days (same as earned)
- Rekurrent subscribers and users with Kurrency balance can gift
Do Votes Affect Kurrency?
Every vote counts equally — this is a democratic platform. Your upvote earns the author +1 Kurrency regardless of your own K-score. Quality is rewarded through post K-score bonuses, not weighted voting.
What About Downvotes?
Downvotes don't directly reduce your Kurrency balance. However, posts with negative karma earn reduced Kurrency:
- Post karma ≥ 0: Full Kurrency earned
- Post karma < 0: Reduced earning (+5 for post, no upvote earnings)
- Post karma < -10: No Kurrency earned
How Does Kurrency Affect K-Score?
Your K-Score is based on lifetime earned Kurrency, not your current balance. Spending or gifting Kurrency does not lower your trust score. The more you contribute, the higher your K-Score.

Higher tiers earn more Kurrency per dollar — a thank-you for deeper commitment to the platform. Rekurrent subscribers also get all features unlocked and can gift surplus Kurrency to other members.
One-Time Donations
One-time donations earn Kurrency at a flat rate of 10 Kurrency per $1. This is a great way to try premium features before committing to a monthly subscription.
